Bedside Manners With Mia Moretti
Interview by Victoria Lewis | Photos by Janell Shirtcliff
Mia Moretti, DJ. On selective jet lag, her love of Scandal and why she prefers to work after dark.
WHAT WAS YOUR BEST NIGHT EVER OF SLEEP?
The night I get home to my own bed after any trip
AND YOUR WORST NIGHT?
When I'm traveling on a long journey eastward. I only get jet lag when I'm on vacation and my body knows it doesn't have to be up urgently the next day. When I'm flying to a city for a day or two days, I'm fine. The exhaustion and confusion triumph. But when it's leisure, forget it, ill be up ‘til 7AM thinking of every e-mail I didn't send and every phone call I have to return. The only time I actually remember to catch up on personal phone calls is when I'm jet lagged or when I’m meditating at the end of yoga, "OM. Oh ya, call mom."
WHAT TIME DO YOU GO TO SLEEP?
I’m a night owl. Even when I'm not working late, I can't go to bed ‘til at least 2AM. My creative process starts after dark when the rest of the world shuts down.
WHAT'S ON YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE?
Louise Gluck’s Faithful and Virtuous Night poetry book, a pencil, a pad of paper, tissues, a candle, usually a crossword puzzle or a bit of the NY Times, a New Yorker magazine and a silk eye mask.
WHAT PUTS YOU TO SLEEP?
WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT?
Unwatched episodes of Scandal.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MIDNIGHT SNACK?
WHAT DO YOU WEAR TO SLEEP?
WHAT'S ON YOUR BEDTIME READING LIST?
Something off my bedtime table selection.
ARE YOU A NIGHT OWL OR A MORNING PERSON?
WHAT TIME DO YOU WAKE UP?
Six or seven hours after I go to bed.
WHAT'S THE FIRST THING YOU DO IN THE MORNING?
Read The Skimm, and catch up on the stories that interest me.
BED: MADE OR UNMADE?
I always make my bed. It's too precious to leave unloved.
