Next to My Bed: Eliza Blank

It's been nearly a year since COVID-19 has pushed us to reimagine the meaning of "home" and the concept of bringing a little bit of the outdoors, indoors. For Eliza Blank, however, the idea of ushering nature into one's home is old news.

The Founder & CEO of The Sill founded her modern plant delivery service to "bridge the gap between plants and people," by offering chic products and services that work within just about anyone's budget and lifestyle. And yes, we're talking to those of you who have never owned or kept a plant alive before.

"Plants make us happier, healthier, more efficient and boost our creativity," Blank says on The Sill's website. "Why not bring the outdoors in? We think everyone deserves to have their own personal plant oasis."

Here, she shares what's next to her bed.

What side of the bed do you sleep on?

If I'm in bed, I'm on the right side and I sleep on my right side; my husband is always on the left and he sleeps on his left side. Match made in heaven.

What can you not sleep without?

A pillow between my knees. It's a trick I picked up from my mother and has endless benefits, from better neck and back alignment to blood circulation.

What is currently next to your bed?

I have a side table and lamp next to my bed. I also have the overhead lights and ceiling fan switch on my side of the bed, which is super annoying, because I'm always the one who has to get up to turn everything off at night.

On it, I keep my glasses, my book (or Kindle, I go back and forth); and in the drawers I have extra hair ties, Chapstick, discarded jewelry I remove at night (I can't sleep with ANY jewelry on, not even my wedding ring) and books I've already completed.

What is the strangest thing that's next to your bed?

I also keep diapers, baby wipes, and a children's picture book within reach. My morning routine includes my toddler coming into bed with me while we both wake up. She has a bottle of warm milk and then I usually change her diaper while we're still lounging in the bed. It sounds gross but it's really not!

What would you not be able to sleep without being next to your bed?

Even though my daughter just turned two, I still have a baby monitor tucked away on the floor next to my bed. I don't even keep it on - but I turn it on if I have the urge to take a peek. I will have to let that go eventually!

Do you keep any other electronics next to your bed?

I do tend to sleep with my phone on my bedside table as well. Sometimes on the weekends I have the discipline to leave it out of the bedroom but not always.

What is your nighttime routine in 5 steps or less.

I am newly obsessed with the double cleanse routine from Glow Recipe. You start with the Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm and follow with the Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser. I finish off with the Plum Plump Hyaluronic Serum and layer on a Caudalie Night Cream. I brush my teeth using my Quip toothbrush, swap my contact lenses for glasses, swab on some lip balm and I'm done!
